Part 3: What Then?

This was supposed to be a three part series, but it will probably be 4 or 5 parts. Sydcarmy is a tangled mess of intense care interlaced with anxiety and denial. So they need HELP from their friends and family along the way! Here's a convo with Natalie and Carmen. It takes place just a few days after he found out that he'd made Sydney's best meal ever. Then he inadvertently confessed she's the best part of his day and his heart's dearest wish...j/k, but not really ;)

On a brisk Monday afternoon Carmen rang the bell at Pete and Natalie's home. The doorbell's speaker answered back, with Natalie's hurried voice. "It's open Bear! Just come up to the nursery." He entered their home noting the new family photos hanging on the wall leading up the stairs. They were black and white shots with Pete and Nat walking into the hospital, the next just after Baby Angeline was placed in Natalie's arms, another with Pete and the baby, one shot of her curled bitty toes, and the last was all three of them in the hospital bed. Pete had hired a hospital photographer and as antithetical as that was to anyone with an ounce of Berzatto blood, Natalie let him do it. The result was so unexpectedly tender and beautiful that he paused on the stairs to soak it in. Pete is really a good guy. He was made from an entirely different mold than any man Carmy had grown up around. "Carm?!" Natalie called. "Coming." He turned into the nursery to find Natalie bundling up "Angie" and fastening her into one of those baby slings. Then with one fluid motion before he could speak, she slipped the sling over his shoulders. "Okay, Uncle she's yours!" "So, how does this work?" he asked, looking down at his tiny niece, his eyes as big as beach balls. Angie blinked back at him extremely unbothered.

Natalie rolled her eyes and chortled.

"It's already working. It's fool-proof! Okay, let me get my coat and we'll head out." They strolled down the older suburb's tree-lined streets past others pushing babies, walking dogs, and the occasional Amazon delivery truck. "Carmy, this is really nice and you're welcome to drop by anytime, but what did you want to talk about?" Natalie enquired. He had texted her the other night asking to discuss something important. He kept his eyes on Angie's blissful little face, swallowed, and began. "I'd like to split my share of the restaurant with Syd. She's put in so much work, took several months without pay, and even though I'm the EC she's the main developer of at least half of the menu and the weekly specials. When I was sick recently, she ran the place like a pro. She deserves it. Also, I think if I give her a financial stake she'll stay for at least 5 years. We need that. What do you think?"

Natalie contemplated him for a moment. "Well, part of me agrees and the other part...Carmy, please don't get defensive." "Nat. How can I not when you’ve said that?" "Is this a solely a business decision? Because if it isn't I don't think you need to or should do this to keep her. " Carmy stopped walking, his face falling with frustration and shame. "Have you been talking to Richie?" Natalie stopped and took his arm in hers. "No, I haven't. Look, sorry. What I meant is things are so good between you two." They resumed walking. "Yeah, and that's a problem?" "Not at all. The way you are together...maybe it's the hormones but I've cried sometimes because you are just yourself with her. I've never seen you smile so much with anyone else. Your freakin’ posture is more relaxed when she comes in the room. I could go on, Bear." "You see all that? What about-what about her? Am I any good for her?" he asked in a low, wistful tone. Natalie pulled his arm tighter. She paused, to choose her words carefully. She and Camry were no strangers to family interference in their love lives. "Well, I haven't known Sydney that long, but she tends to spiral, and she pushes through until she's sick or lashes out. Kinda like you do. I noticed that it’s gotten better though. Since we opened, you've been consistently checking in with her, collaborating with her, encouraging her, making her take breaks, and pouring time into her. She's far less doubtful; she believes in herself."

Carm nodded slowly, reflecting on Sydney's growth. "Well, she deserves that. I promised her that she wasn’t alone in this. My focus was not where it should’ve have been during the reno and Friends and Family.”

He exhaled heavily and went on.  

“So, it sounds like she lights up my life and for her, I'm a good boss or even her big brother."

Natalie shook her head, smirking.

" Yeah, you’re a great boss now, but little sisters don't look at their brothers the way Sydney does you. Do you remember when we were all talking in my office and you spilled hot coffee on your shirt? You peeled it off and the poor girl looked at you, as your sister it pains me say this, like she wanted to jump you. When you left to get a clean shirt, she didn't remember what she had been saying." " What!?!? Okay...." Carm scoffed trying and failing to suppress a huge smile. "Also, does she ever leave before 11 instead of sitting in those greasy whites with you every single night for how long? One to two hours!?" She continued. "My point is if you want to divide your share with her because it's good business and fair, and I agree it is, then let me do it too so we're even. Otherwise, I think you’re already three-quarters of the way there with her. She doesn't need to be bought."

They walked in silence for a few minutes. "Natalie, I understand, but I still want to split my share. I think it’s the right thing to do. You don't need split yours though." "First I don't want the largest share of the restaurant and second.... Pete and I may move to be near his parents next year." Natalie bit her lip and glanced at Carmy worry etched in her brow.

"We think it would be good for Angie. You know, to be close to her grandparents and she'd have young cousins nearby too." Carm squeezed her arm, missing her already. "Yeah, I met them at the wedding. They were...Pete’s parents for sure. Angie would have a normal set of grandparents around." Natalie took a deep breath, a gamut of emotions crossing her face. "Choosing Pete was the biggest act of rebellion of my life. I honestly felt repulsed by him at first, until I realized that he was real, and I didn't have to be on guard all the time. Angeline should have that from the start." She bent over to kiss her baby's head which was protected from the cool air by a lilac-colored beanie. "Sydney's a really good choice too. Businesswise and/or otherwise. So, if you're certain about this call Uncle Cicero. This won't change anything with our loan repayment, but his lawyer could help draft a contract. Then we'll ask Sydney if she wants to accept and if she refuses...just give her one of those Sydney-land stares of yours."

Carmy groaned. "You did talk to Richie!"

Natalie erupted into a storm of giggles. Carmen dropped her arm.

"Look, he started it. I told him to chill, but that Sydney-land thing...You have an season pass, bro! It’s very cute though.”

Before turning to respectable science fiction, Robert Silberberg cut his teeth writing monsters and aliens for magazines like Monster Parade and Super-Science Fiction. Many had the feel of sub-EC horror comics of the 50s. Some highlights:

この分類法は「主に EC (電子商取引) 向けではあるものの、広く捉えればあらゆる UX のカテゴリ分けに適用できる、非常に柔軟な分類法である (P.94)」としています。

「ディセプティブパターンの分類はすでに決まりきっていて、これ以上種類が増えることはないと考えてしまいがちだが、現実には、人間の巧妙さと搾取的な行動に限界はない (P.94)」とも述べており、「万能な分類法が存在しない (P.95)」としています。実際、本記事執筆時点で「Deceptive Patterns」サイトの「Types of deceptive pattern」を見てみると、上記の分類法とは異なるアプローチを紹介。

・比較防止 機能と価格が複雑に組み合わされていたり、重要な情報が見つけにくいため、ユーザーは製品を比較するのに苦労しています。

・ 恥をかくことを確認する ユーザーは感情的に操作され、他の方法ではやらないようなことをするようになります。

・ 偽装広告 ユーザーはインターフェイス要素またはネイティブ コンテンツをクリックしていると誤って信じますが、実際にはそれは偽装された広告です。

・ 偽の希少性 ユーザーは、供給が限られている、または人気があるという偽の表示が表示されるため、アクションを完了するよう圧力をかけられます。

・ 偽の社会的証明 ユーザーは、偽のレビュー、体験談、アクティビティ メッセージが表示されたため、製品が実際よりも人気がある、または信頼できると誤解させられます。

・ 偽りの緊急性 偽の時間制限が提示されるため、ユーザーはアクションを完了するよう圧力をかけられます。

・ 強制的な行動 ユーザーは何かをしたいと思っていますが、その代わりに別の望ましくないことをする必要があります。

Can I quilt???

I'm a pretty good sewer. My mom taught me on her old Brother sewing machine and I made a pretty awesome turtle pillow in junior high home-ec class that many other GenXers probably remember too. One thing I never learned was QUILTING.

My old sewing machine died last fall after 20+ years of good service so I had to buy a new machine. I figured it was about time to learn something new and really put this machine to work. I'm a woman with a mission and I know how to use YouTube. YouTube taught me to fix my TV, install a toilet, replace outlets and light fixtures.... how hard can quilting be? Who knows! Maybe it will become my early retirement exit strategy!

I started this journey with a few thoughts in mind...

I wanted start with fabric I already had on hand. After 20 years of Halloween costumes, RennFest outfits, clothes... I had a lot. Mostly because I'm a firm believer in rounding up when buying fabric. Why buy 1 3/4 yards when you could get 2 yards for a buck or two more? Call it lazy, call it sewing anxiety... who cares. I had a shit ton of fabric.

I wanted to keep it simple and affordable. Nothing fancy... just learn some simple, basic patterns and go from there. I don't have a fancy $2000 computerized Bernina or a dedicated cutting area... just I'm using what I have.

I wanted to support small businesses in my area. Joann Fabric, you know the store that has been around FOREVER for all your sewing needs? Gone. Now what?!?! I have found more than a few small business fabric stores in my area that have everything I would need. Plus a bunch of online stores (some small businesses as well!) for other stuff! I'm trying hard to NOT purchase from Amazon. He doesn't need our money but small businesses do. Yeah, you'll pay a bit more and may not get stuff in 2-days but practice some patience.

I have pulled all the leftover fabric that looks quiltable. Watched more videos than you could possibly imagine and I'm ready.

Shout out to Karen Brown from Just Do It Quilts. She has a great YouTube channel with all kinds of info for a new quilter. She also has a great pattern to start my very first quilt with.

honestly, Amity's hair color is the perfect metaphor for her character. She's still hiding her true colors, she's just trying to match Luz instead of Odalia.

So even at the time, when I was still deep in the paint of TOH, I had a major problem with it as far as the themes, metaphors and just designs of TOH went. Put both Amity and Luz at that time into their Hexside uniforms. Then silhouette them so you have no colors. Now try to tell me which is which.

It was a genuine problem for me during that time period where I'd see sketch fanart of Lumity and have to look for Amity's ears because otherwise the two are indistinguishable from each other. Like yes, it's a MUCH more boring hairstyle and I'm with others that there's just way too much purple in the show so Amity's green hair helped her actually stand out but this really was a big problem and got worse as I got more critical of Lumity. After all, this moment of making sure she has her own identity, stands out from others and will decide her own fate... And she looks the fucking same as another character now, blending in more easily with them. Then she just goes on to slowly have the rest of her personality and life (which were already doing this, thank you "your grades are slipping" from Escaping Expulsion for that one) consumed by her role of girlfriend.

It makes what should be such a character defining moment anything but that. Hell, it isn't even a complete schism from her family's desires and wishes. She still goes on to effectively helm Blight Industries after all, or so I presume unless she started her own competing abominations factory which still doesn't fix that that's STILL what Odalia would have wanted had Amity failed to get into the EC. It's still living in the shadow of her father's legacy and following in his own footsteps.

It's actually the one major cue from Hunter that Amity takes for her arc which really doesn't help the two feel like they aren't the same character. At least with Hunter, we only have one action that's confirmed as being the same as those he's supposed to be rejecting so as to find his own personhood: Rejecting Belos. There's a lot more we can claim but that's the only one 100% confirmed.

Amity though? Her future includes dedicating herself to a potentially unhealthy degree to her partner while also commercializing her magic into mech-infused abominations. Even if Lumity is healthy post the series, nothing about Amity's behavior doesn't imply she'd drop everything for Luz at a moment's notice and Alador gave the same impression. So... She just became her dad? Why?

Then again, when you are a show that seems to actually struggle to write a diverse cast of characters (I mean personality wise, not ethnicity), this is going to happen. Dana is a good enough artist though that the silhouette problem shouldn't have happened. That should have been caught and stopped immediately, not when it's so antithetical to the point of the moment. I guess you could say it's to show she still needs to make another step to becoming her own person but that never really happens, does it? And we explicitly know they didn't have proper plans for it to happen.

So yeah, it really is just perfect for who Amity became, even right down to being a worse design to go alongside girlfriend Amity being such a worse character.

Head Start program appears safe from Trump — for now

As nonprofits, programs and advocates across the country brace for deep cuts from President Donald Trump and his administration during this year’s budget process, one popular early childhood program appears to be safe, writes CalMatters’ Carolyn Jones.

The 60-year-old Head Start program provides low-income families early childhood education, meals and parenting support. Last year it served 800,000 children from birth through age 5, including 83,000 kids in California.

The program is relatively cost-efficient: Compared to a private preschool in California, which can cost more than $20,000 per pupil a year, Head Start’s per-pupil annual cost is roughly $13,700. But Trump’s initial April budget plan had the $12.27 billion program on the chopping block. 

The potential elimination of the program kicked off an intense crusade led by Head Start staff, families and advocates who argued that the program was vital for keeping families out of poverty. Congress received more than 300,000 letters and petitions to save the program amassed more than 48,000 signatures.

The fierce campaign seems to have been successful: Trump’s latest budget proposal released last week doesn’t touch the program. It’s a striking win given that the agency that oversees Head Start, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is facing dramatic cuts, including a more than 20% reduction in workforce.

But the uncertainty of other programs intertwined with Head Start, such as Medicaid, and the fact that the budget may change mean Head Start isn’t out of the woods just yet. 

Tommy Sheridan, deputy director of the National Head Start Association: “Folks are scared. The fact that eliminating Head Start was even under consideration has been scary.”

Schools struggle to implement billing changes

The vision? Allow schools to directly bill health insurers, allowing them to hire more staff and offer more services.

In practice? More than a year after some school districts were supposed to implement the new billing changes, only a small portion have begun doing so, reports CalMatters’ Ana B. Ibarra.

In response to rising rates of depression and anxiety among young students, California in 2021 launched a five-year, $4.7 billion initiative to expand mental health services and workforce. One piece of the initiative included a new billing program for schools to charge Medi-Cal and private insurers for mental health services. 

The California Department of Health Care Services, tasked with overseeing implementation of the new billing practices, set July 2024 as a rollout target. But only 14 school districts and county offices of education have begun billing for behavioral health services, out of a total of 494 that have signed up to do so.

School leaders say that delayed guidance and training from the state are contributing to the slow rollout. In Santa Clara County, the delays in reimbursement forced its office of education to notify its mental health staff about possible layoffs.

CA sues Trump administration (again)

In its 19th lawsuit against the current Trump administration, California Attorney General Rob Bonta said Wednesday that the state is suing the U.S. Federal Highway Administration for blocking funds geared towards building electric vehicle chargers across the country.

California joins 16 other states in filing the lawsuit, which accuses the administration of illegally withholding $5 billion that Congress had already appropriated to states. In addition to the $300 million California could lose, Bonta said thousands of jobs are at risk.

Bonta, at a press conference in Burlingame: “California has already signed nearly $37 million in contracts … to construct EV chargers, with projects along major travel corridors, ready to move into construction. But the Federal Highway Administration’s actions threaten to delay construction and stop local industries from building these chargers.”

Electric vehicles are critical to California’s ambitious goals to reduce carbon emissions. About 30% of new zero-emission vehicles sold in the U.S. are sold in California, according to the California Air Resources Board. But the state lacks a robust network of charging stations — especially if it is to support the 7 million electric cars that are expected to be on its road by 2030.

Moon Girl is something of a unique Golden Age heroine in that she was the only super powered character to appear in EC Comics, whose usual stock in trade was lurid horror and crime stories. She had a short-lived comics career that lasted less than two years between 1947 and 1949, but in her main six issue run she managed cram at least three adventures into each edition, meaning there were several adventures in her canon, frequently reprinted in subsequent years. Moon Girl was the brainchild of writer Bill Woolfolk and illustrator Sheldon Moldoff and first appeared in The Happy Houlihans #1 (Fall 1947) before being given her own title soon after. She had a similar backstory to Wonder Woman, in that she originated from a semi-mythical tribe of Scythian warrior women, amongst whom she was the Princess of the Moon, and came to the modern world to fight injustice. However, Moon Girl was not suffused with the Amazon code of peace, and rather than try to convince bad guys of the error of their ways as was WW’s wont, she was more likely to crack them across the jaw with a super-powered fist, as displayed in the second of the two pages featured here. Her super powers (strength, super speed and telepathic control of her own moonship) derived from a piece of actual moon rock, known as the “moonstone”

Interestingly, Moon Girl also had a partner, Prince Mengu, a former suitor, defeated by the princess in a physical contest to win her hand, but whom she later realised she loved. Mengu then accompanied Moon Girl on her adventures, and, refreshingly, the pair worked on equal terms, with the princess the more powerful of the two. The partnership meant that a number of the early stories were entitled Moon Girl and the Prince. The heroine’s alter ego was secretary Claire Lune, a junior school history teacher, her name being a bit of a giveaway if you were linguistically inclined.

The Moon Girl adventures were good rollicking fun and it is a shame the character was retired so quickly, but EC’s niche market meant Moon Girl was always an incongruous addition to the stable and her title eventually became a romance and then a horror comic - in fact some of her adventures, which featured the supernatural, prefigured this shift. There was a brief reboot of the classic Moon Girl in 2010, but she has nothing to do with the eight year old Marvel comics genius of the same name.

The story featured is as camp as it is fantastic, and is entitled, Plunderers From The Past, appearing in Moon Girl #6 (March 1949). The tale involves shipwrecked ne’er-do-wells from history being freed from their frozen suspended animation by Von Krupp, a Nazi criminal genius, to commit crimes at his behest. They eventually receive their comeuppance at the hands of Moon Girl who escorts the defeated sorry band to prison with a neat line in trash talk. It would be nice to see the classic Moon Girl revived - perhaps as a member of Birds of Prey…

(Last Ask, I promise!) I found the part you were talking about. Admittedly, I had to look for it on my older sister's Amazon Kindle Edition of Traces of Two Pasts, since it was a lot easier to find it there than looking for it in my physical book version.

Holy shit, you were not kidding. Aerith really did throw a fucking temper tantrum. She's horrified that her 8th birthday party has to be postponed, not even caring that Meguro just had a heart attack. Her birthday party wasn't even cancelled, it was merely postponed, and yet she's horrified about that instead of Meguro having a heart attack. She calls her 8th birthday a "special day" while everyone else is rightfully panicking that Meguro literally almost died. She holes herself up in her room "for long stretches of time" and cries over her birthday party getting postponed. She says that she was "overcome with anger at Meguro and his stupid heart attack" — what the actual fuck?! On her actual 8th birthday, she refuses to eat anything, not even Elmyra's breakfast, when she discovers that Elmyra had left to speak with Meguro. And finally, later that same day, on her actual 8th birthday, when some kids in Sector 5 tried to get her to come out and play with them, she fucking ignored them.

Meanwhile, in stark comparison, when Tifa was 8 years old, she lost her mother Thea to an illness and she literally almost died herself afterwards, ending up in a week-long coma and having no memory of her accident for 6 months afterwards (as confirmed by @/cloti_ct on Twitter). Oh and despite the entire village of Nibelheim blaming Cloud for her accident, Tifa herself never blamed him.

Aerith's enthusiasm about turning eight years old withered away, and as the adults rushed to and fro sorting out their grown-up concerns, she took to closing herself up in her room for long stretches of time, much of which was spent in tears. One moment, she'd find herself overcome with anger at Meguro and his stupid heart attack, and the next, she’d be paralyzed with guilt.

When the morning of her birthday did arrive, she went downstairs to find that Elmyra wasn't even at home. There was only a very plain breakfast on the table, along with a note explaining that her mother had left early to speak with Meguro.

Aerith retreated upstairs without eating. A while later, she heard children from the Sector 5 House at the door, asking her to come out and play. She ignored them.]]

And for people who think she grew out of this behaviour, she acts exactly the same way in EC when a picnic she planned to go on with the leaf house kids gets cancelled because one of the orphans goes missing.

She's a horrible person.
